How can hostile architecture in public spaces be reimagined to create inclusive and accessible cities?

“Anti-homeless,”” hostile,” or “defensive” architecture hides on the streets of cities in plain sight. It is an urban-design strategy that uses elements of the built environment to purposefully restrict and impede people from various behaviors: from laying down on benches to leaning on walls. It is a detrimental practice that planners, architects, councils and taxpayers pay huge amounts of money for, and are often unaware of.

Civilize is an urban planning firm dedicated to creating inclusive and accessible public spaces, and is the first one of its kind in a movement toward making public space for the public. Civilize aims to eliminate and reimagine hostile architecture in cities through consulting with city changemakers and government officials while also creating awareness to city residents to advocate to their policymakers.
